Sustainable Packaging Solutions

Why FROMM Should Be Your No. 1 Choice for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

While packaging solutions are an absolute necessity for the manufacturing, handling, storage and transport of almost all types of goods, an irresponsible approach to packaging can lead to inefficiencies along the production and supply lines, as well as excessive waste generation. So, how do you ensure the packaging solutions your business uses are sustainable?

This is a question that FROMM has asked itself when developing its products – how do we ensure our packaging solutions are sustainable while still meeting the high-quality demands of our clients? And we’re very proud to say that we have the answer.

Reduce

The first step to being sustainable, is to minimise the amount of waste that needs to be processed in the first place. And, since innovation is right up our alley, this is a great place for us to start.

Replacing the traditional waste-heavy protective and void-filling materials, our airpad protective material consists of 99% air and 1% film. Less material, less weight and less storage space requirements result in less waste, lower costs and substantial overall savings. So, not only does less material end up in landfills, our protective packaging solutions also help reduce the carbon impact of transportation by reducing the weight of packages being transported compared to those using traditional protective materials.

Reuse

The next step in ensuring sustainability in our industry is by looking at reusable solutions. As long as something is being used, it does not end up in a landfill. Our airpads mentioned above, for example, are designed to be reusable. So, not only do they create less waste, by using less material, they also have an extended life, resulting in even less waste.

Recycle

Lastly, recycle where possible. Most of our products are made from recycled material, and are also recyclable after use. STARstrap™, our PET strapping, for example, is made of 100% polyester. The bulk of this raw material is manufactured in the FROMM-owned plastics recycling plant in Wolfen, Germany. In fact, FROMM is one of the largest PET recycling companies in the world.

More than ever, there is a focus on efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible to protect our environment – and FROMM takes this challenge to be sustainable very seriously, while still delivering packaging solutions of the highest quality. We do our part conscientiously, and we will continue to do so in the future, improving our processes even further wherever we can.

What is PET Strapping

What Is PET Strapping, and Is It Worth Using?

When it comes to packaging solutions, there are many to choose from. Sometimes, these options can become difficult to navigate, so to help you choose the best option for your needs, we’ll take a closer look at what PET strapping is, and whether it is the right choice to meet the demands of your business.

First, what is PET strapping?

In short, this is similar to metal strapping used to secure bundles, boxes, pallets and more, but made out of polyester instead of the traditional metal. For years the perception has existed that plastic straps are weaker and inferior to their metal counterparts, but, as raw materials, engineering capabilities and manufacturing methods have improved, this is not at all the case anymore. In fact, today, PET strapping comes with a number of unique benefits that makes this the preferred option for many industries.

What benefits does this packaging solution offer?

1. Strong, versatile and durable

Modern-day PET strapping can be as tough as its steel counterpart, while offering additional benefits, such as its elongation properties, making it ideal for lumber products and other materials that are prone to contraction and expansion. It does not rust, it is water and UV resistant, and it will not stain packaged goods.

2. Cost effective

What is the cost of this improved performance? That’s the best part – typically, it is cheaper than its steel counterpart. On top of that, you can also count on lower handling costs, reduced operator fatigue, and potentially reduced weight of packaged goods – all of which add to the potential savings.

3. More eco-friendly

Polyester (or PET) straps are more environmentally friendly than its steel counterpart. The manufacturing process is less energy intensive, the straps can be made from recycled materials or be recycled after use, and its lightweight nature that reduces overall weight load can translate into fuel savings during transport.

4. Safer to handle

The handling of steel strapping poses a number of risks. These include the strain of the heavy weight, and the sharp edges that can cut hands, or damage packaged goods or forklift tyres. Because they lack these sharp edges, the polyester straps are easier to handle, apply and dispose of.

When you consider all of these benefits, what is stopping you from switching to PET strapping?
