What Is PET Strapping, and Is It Worth Using?

When it comes to packaging solutions, there are many to choose from. Sometimes, these options can become difficult to navigate, so to help you choose the best option for your needs, we’ll take a closer look at what PET strapping is, and whether it is the right choice to meet the demands of your business.

First, what is PET strapping?

In short, this is similar to metal strapping used to secure bundles, boxes, pallets and more, but made out of polyester instead of the traditional metal. For years the perception has existed that plastic straps are weaker and inferior to their metal counterparts, but, as raw materials, engineering capabilities and manufacturing methods have improved, this is not at all the case anymore. In fact, today, PET strapping comes with a number of unique benefits that makes this the preferred option for many industries.

What benefits does this packaging solution offer?

1. Strong, versatile and durable

Modern-day PET strapping can be as tough as its steel counterpart, while offering additional benefits, such as its elongation properties, making it ideal for lumber products and other materials that are prone to contraction and expansion. It does not rust, it is water and UV resistant, and it will not stain packaged goods.

2. Cost effective

What is the cost of this improved performance? That’s the best part – typically, it is cheaper than its steel counterpart. On top of that, you can also count on lower handling costs, reduced operator fatigue, and potentially reduced weight of packaged goods – all of which add to the potential savings.

3. More eco-friendly

Polyester (or PET) straps are more environmentally friendly than its steel counterpart. The manufacturing process is less energy intensive, the straps can be made from recycled materials or be recycled after use, and its lightweight nature that reduces overall weight load can translate into fuel savings during transport.

4. Safer to handle

The handling of steel strapping poses a number of risks. These include the strain of the heavy weight, and the sharp edges that can cut hands, or damage packaged goods or forklift tyres. Because they lack these sharp edges, the polyester straps are easier to handle, apply and dispose of.
